My Teaching Philosophy
I think it’s important to meet guitar students where they are and to build from there. For example, at their first lesson, I find out which music they love and want to learn to play. This gives me a strong clue as to what will motivate the student. Without motivation, it is very, very difficult for them to improve.
It takes me a few lessons to discover their learning style, but I believe this is crucial to the guitar student’s success. Every student learns in a different way. It is my job as a guitar teacher to impart musical knowledge in a way that they can understand, internalise and put into action on the instrument.
No matter if they are a beginner, self-taught, or more advanced player, this gives me a solid starting point from which I build a learning structure specifically for that student.
Every student has challenges, no matter how advanced they may be! Whether it is a technical challenge, sense of rhythm, reading music or musical expression they struggle with, I’m there to help!
I really enjoy the variety of guitar students that come to me for lessons. Some students have never touched a musical instrument in their life and are fulfilling a life-long dream to learn to play the guitar; some are more advance but self-taught and have ‘gaps’ in their technique; and some have progressed steadily through the music exam grades to be advanced players and just want a masterclass or “second opinion” on their concert repertoire.
Whilst I started to play classical guitar at a young age, I had a long hiatus when I ran away to join the world of rock music as a bass player. It was 20 years ago that I came back to the classical guitar and re-discovered my love of that instrument and that repertoire. It took a lot of work as an adult to regain my skills on that instrument. This has given me a unique perspective and depth of understanding and, hopefully, maturity as a guitar teacher. - Alan Plummer
